The first printing of 7,500 copies of The North Carolina Atlas sold out by mid-summer, 2001, a little over a year after its publication. It ranked as one of the top five bestsellers out of the UNC Press' list of over 1,500 titles. This success led to a second printing of the book, which became available in October, 2001.
